Rep. Wilson Weighs in on President Obama’s Gun Control Action
President Obama is planning to take executive action to reduce gun violence in the United States.
Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — On Monday, President Barack Obama met with Attorney General Loretta Lynch to discuss ways to reduce gun violence in the United States. Last week, the President said one of his new year’s resolutions is to tackle the gun violence epidemic in America. The President referenced a bill blocked by the Senate several years ago that would have required stricter background checks.
“Each time we’re told that commonsense reforms like background checks might not have stopped the last massacre, or the one before that, so we shouldn’t do anything,” said President Obama. “We know that we can’t stop every act of violence, but what if we tried to stop even one?”
However, some Republicans in Washington share a different view. Congressman Joe Wilson called the President’s plan for action a ‘diversion.’
“I would tell you that what the President is proposing is no consequences,” explained Representative Wilson. “It’s a diversion from the tragedy that we have of people not receiving proper mental health services and it’s a diversion from the global war on terrorism.”
To reduce gun violence, Representative Wilson said the government needs to reform mental health services and focus on securing the nations borders.
“We need to make sure that we keep out of this country and secure our borders to keep out of this country terrorists who will be coming in under the guise of being refugees,” said Rep. Wilson. “They are coming to this country, as we have seen in San Bernardino, for the intent of killing American families.”
Following his discussion with the Attorney General on Monday, President Obama said he looks forward to speaking with the American people this week about several initiatives they discussed to help reduce gun violence.
