Powerball Mania Hits the Midlands

Cayce, S.C. (WOLO) –Ticket sales surge as the Powerball jackpot grows to $500 million.

“This is something that has taken hold all over the country and people are really excited about it and we’re really excited about it,” says Paula Harper Bethea with the South Carolina Education Lottery.
Regardless of how long or frequently you’ve been playing everyone has the same 1 in 292 million odds of taking home the top prize.

“The chances of winning are not that great but hey, if you don’t play you don’t win,” says Freddy Powers.

This is the mindset of most Powerball players, unconcerned by the less than favorable numbers.
According to Powers, “This is the American dream, if you can win this kind of money, my gosh look at what it would do for you.”
That thought heavy on the mind of those purchasing tickets.
But the real winners are the students benefiting from tonight’s jaw dropping jackpot.
“When we have a jackpot this size in South Carolina and our sales are this brisk it increases what we can transfer to education somewhere between 3-7 million,” says Harper Bethea
