Two SC Police Officers Cleared in Fatal November Shooting
A South Carolina police department says two of its officers have been cleared in the fatal shooting of a motorist in November
CAYCE, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina police department says two of its officers have been cleared in the fatal shooting of a motorist in November.
Officials in Cayce say an internal investigation found no policy or procedure violations involving Officer Rhett Kelly or Sgt. Frank Ballentine in the death of 21-year-old Demetrius Bryant. Police say prosecutors found no basis for charges.
Bryant died Nov. 17 after a shootout with the officers that escalated after one of the officers found Bryant inside an idling car.
Officials in the suburban Columbia city said last fall one officer was shot and wounded and the other officer was hurt during a struggle with Bryant.
Cayce police say Ballentine returned to duty last week, while Kelly continues to recover from injuries and works on limited duty.
