5 Inmates Charged in Feb. Disturbance at Columbia Prison

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Authorities have charged five inmates at a juvenile prison in Columbia after a disturbance last month.

The inmates are being charged as adults on counts ranging from attempted criminal sexual assault to attempted murder to burglary to arson.

Department of Juvenile Justice officials say the disturbance Feb. 26 started after several prisoners jumped a rival gang leader during a black history month ceremony.

Warrants say one prisoner set fire to toilet paper, then at least two others broke into a girls dorm and tried to sexually assault the residents.

Authorities say glass windows were broken, cars were damaged and one inmate tried to run over someone.

The agency released arrest warrants Thursday, but did not name the inmates or give their ages
