Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler told media outlets that Ryan Burt died at the hospital around 1 a.m. Saturday a short time after he was shot.

Investigators say 25-year-old Zachary Owens is charged with voluntary manslaughter.

Police say Owens called police and told them he shot Burt as he was trying to go home after seeing a fight at a restaurant because Burt came up to him and started punching him in the face. Owens told police he was scared for his life.

Owens remained in jail Saturday. It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer.
