Newberry County Officials Issue Scam Alert

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– Be on the lookout for the latest scam.
According to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, people are getting calls by someone claiming to be an “official” who says they have their child or grandchild in jail for a serious charge.
If money is not received then the loved one will be facing long jail terms claims the caller.
If the person receiving the call falls for the scam, deputies say the scammer will put a person on the line as the loved one continuing the con.

According to the Newberry County Sheriff, the people receiving the calls are often seniors and the calls often come in early in the morning or later in the evening.

Deputies say if you get such a call, contact local law enforcement, also do not trust Caller ID. Numbers are often falsified using technology that will resemble the number being portrayed in the scam.
