Fireflies Split Doubleheader in Augusta
AUGUSTA, GA (Fireflies) — After dropping the first game of the doubleheader to Augusta on Tuesday night, the Fireflies bounced back and defeated the GreenJackets, 5-3, in the night cap. Starter Chase Ingram won his sixth game of the season – a team-high – and Enmanuel Zabala notched his eighth multi-hit game of the year in the victory.
In the second game, Columbia (13-24, 49-58) scored its first runs in near identical fashion. The leadoff batters in the first and second innings –Zabala and Dash Winningham, respectively – reached with base hits off of starter Cory Taylor (L, 8-5). Both moved to third base and scored because of sacrifice flies. It was Eudor Garcia who plated the run in the opening frame and Joe Tushcak in the second.
The second-inning run evened the score at 2-2. The GreenJackets plated two in the bottom of the first and then added another in the third. Jalen Miller walked and moved to second when Seth Harrison singled. Following a steal of third, Miller crossed home after a passed ball. Augusta (23-15, 59-49) led, 3-2.
The Fireflies then knocked Taylor around again in the fourth. Winningham drew a one-out walk and zoomed to third base when Vicente Lupo doubled into the right-field corner. Both runners scored on pitches that sailed to the back stop. Winningham came home on a passed ball and then Lupo followed when Taylor bounced one to the netting. Later in the frame, Tuschak rode the carousel around the base-paths. He walked, stole second base, moved to third on the aforementioned wild pitch and scored on an error. The batter at the plate, Dale Burdick, rolled one down the third-base line and Dillon Dobson fumbled the baseball.
From the fourth inning on, Ingram (W, 6-9) rolled. The righty retired the final seven batters he faced and matched his career-high with eight strikeouts for the fifth time this season.
In the first game, Columbia collected just one hit. Michael Connolly (W, 9-4) had one of his best starts of the season for the GreenJackets, allowing the lone hit to Milton Ramos in the sixth.
The home team plated its first run in the second and broke the game open in the fourth. Jean Angomas’ three-run home run helped catalyze a five-run inning. Raul Jacobson (L, 0-1) lasted just 3.2 frames in his first start with the Fireflies.
The rubber game of the series between Columbia and Augusta is on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. A pair of southpaws square off on the hill, Kevin Canelon (5-8, 3.48) goes for the Fireflies and Domenic Mazza (3-2, 4.31) for the GreenJackets.
