RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO) – Some Richland County Sheriff’s Department deputies are to be thanked for stopping a man from jumping off an overpass onto I-277. The incident, which happened last Tuesday, was all caught on dash cam video.
Lieutenant Albert McLendon was the first on scene.
“I looked over and I some him crouched down with one arm clinging to the side of the bridge, with his back to me which helped me make a decision about what to do next,” he said. The lieutenant reacted quickly, wrapping his arms around the man before he could see him, and telling him that he loves him.
Senior Investigator David Goff was putting gas in his car just down the street.
“This is the, I’d have to say this is probably the first time I went hands on with somebody to stop them,” Goff said.
In a time when tensions between law enforcement and the community are running high across our country, the incident speaks to the reason why people get into the field.
“Not every day do we pull someone off a bridge, but we help people every day in one way or another,” McLendon said. “So, it’s good to know that this has been brought to light, that there’s a lot of good that we do out here.”
