NICHOLS, S.C. (WOLO) – The Pee Dee town of Nichols, home to about 400 people, remained underwater Tuesday, after the Lumber and Little Pee Dee Rivers swelled, causing flash flooding for miles.
Officials say the rivers are not expected to crest until later this week. Dam breaks along rivers and lakes to the North of Nichols in North Carolina are partially to blame for the flooding. Nichols is eight miles from South Carolina’s border with N.C.
Some residents from Nichols left or were rescued last weekend. On Monday, at least 110 people were rescued from the Town Hall in town. Some of them headed to Palmetto Middle School in nearby Mullins, where they remain, uncertain about what’s next.
State Sen. Kent Williams tells ABC Columbia FEMA is expected to arrive in Marion County on Thursday.
