COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – A 32-year-old man was captured in Florida earlier this month and is charged in the fatal hit and run incident that occurred on May 25 on Greystone Boulevard.
Authorities say Christopher Madrid is charged with hit and run involving death and failure to render aid.
Madrid was located and captured in Merritt Island, Florida (Brevard County) on October 18 and extradited to Columbia on October 31 by members of the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force/Operation Intercept Columbia Office and USMS Florida/Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force/Orlando Office, officials with the Columbia Police Department say.
Madrid is accused of leaving the scene of a deadly hit and run incident at I-126 Westbound near Greystone Boulevard.
Investigators believe Madrid was driving a 2008 gray Toyota Corolla when the driver of a Ford Explorer changed lanes and swerved into it. Madrid’s car crossed lanes and hit a concrete median.
The driver of the Explorer lost control, overturned several times, and landed on the side of the road, officials say.
The passenger, who has been previously identified by the Richland County Coroner as 48-year-old Elizabeth Lee Miller, died at the scene.
Members of the Traffic Safety Unit say the driver of the Explorer did not show any signs of impairment. Witnesses told CPD officers that immediately after the crash, Madrid ran away from the scene.
Madrid is currently being housed at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
