COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – A Spring Valley High School senior was one of 11, worldwide, to earn a perfect score on her Advanced Placement Calculus BC exam this year.
Jenning Chen, 18, is the only female out of those 11 perfect scorers. More than 125,000 students took the exam. Chen told ABC Columbia that after finishing the test, she didn’t give it a second thought. Her mom texted her a picture of the letter from The College Board, which oversees the AP program.
“Math is something that I’m really passionate about, so being able to represent something that I’m passionate about in my state,” she said, “I’m really humbled about that.”
You might be surprised to learn that Chen feels just as comfortable shooting photographs as she does solving math problems.
“She’s just that balance of creativity, of that drive and motivation that you want in any student,” visual arts teacher Josh Keiper said. “And then just the intelligence and calculated moves that she makes in everything.”
Design, for Chen, bridges the gap between application and communication. She took that connection to the next level to code and design TutorIn.org. The site connects tutors at Spring Valley with students to tutor. In just a few weeks the site already has 100 users.
Chen hopes to continue pursuing her passions at Stanford University next fall where she wants to dive into the world of finance.
