Charleston, SC (WOLO)– Jury Selection in the Federal Death Penalty trial of Dylann Roof was postponed Monday in Charleston.

Judge Richard Gergel announced a private hearing would be held about a request to Roof’s right to a fair and impartial jury trial.

Attendees in the courtroom were surprised that the jury selection was postponed, they reacted.

ABC’S Gabrielle Franklin reports.

Cheryl McGinnis, Traveled from NYC: “My first thought was how can i protect the families. I can’t do anything but the victim’s families were sitting right there with this this grace about them. It’s just mind-boggling.”
Ran Henry,: “it is tearing the hearts out of the people who had November 7th circled in blood on their calendars for all this time. If you recall, July of last year, was the initial time when they could begin to expect justice of some sort for their lost”
After seeing the short amount of time the families spent in the courtroom, those we spoke with say their hearts went out to the victims’ families.
“I was at Mother Emmanuel yesterday, they are strong people and they were gearing up for a trial past a trial of legal proportions. A trail of having to relive the worst day of their lives. And in all that preparation and anticipation, they were brought in for around four minutes and told to leave. My heart is broken.”
McGinnis: “We could not be any more sorry for the incredible loss that you suffered. Besides the lost of people but the safety that you’ve worked generations to feel like yo have in this country.”
