‘Disturbing scene’ found on SC university campus

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO-TV) — A group of artists claimed responsibility for a disturbing scene at Winthrop University.

Black nylon stockings filled with dirt were found hanging from trees outside Tillman Hall.

A sign was also taped over a plaque reading “Tillman’s Legacy.”

The group says it was intended to call attention to the effort to remove the former governor and avowed racist’s name from the building.

A spokesperson for the university says many found the display upsetting and those responsible will be held accountable.
