Claflin Volleyball Wins SIAC Championship

claflin-volleyballBIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Claflin) – Benedict College hit just .098 and Claflin University took a 3-0 victory over the Lady Tigers in the 2016 SIAC Volleyball Championship on Wednesday night in the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Benedict, now 16-14 overall, will take on Albany State in an elimination match on Thursday at 11 a.m. Eastern. The winner of that match will advance to face the winner between Clark Atlanta and Tuskegee at 5 p.m. Eastern.

Claflin won the match 25-22, 25-13, 25-17. Claflin recorded eight service aces in the match.

The Lady Panthers used a six-point run in the first set to take an 18-11 lead. Benedict cut the lead to 22-20 on a kill by V’Aira Harris, but couldn’t get any closer.

Claflin scored the final six points to claim the second set. A four-point run broke a 10-10 tie, and another four-point run gave the Lady Panthers a 19-12 lead.

Harris led Benedict with 10 kills. Brianne McMillian had 17 assists. Claflin’s Bria Brontson, the SIAC MVP and Offensive Player of the Year, led the Lady Panthers with 18 kills. Claflin will face Kentucky State in a battle of the tournament’s two undefeated teams at 2 p.m. Eastern.
