When Clemson fell to Alabama in the 2015 season’s National Championship game, Dabo Swinney knew his team’s wait to reach the top of their sport would extend another year. The weight on the program and the wait for the fans would tack on another season searching for a second title to go with the Tigers’ top prize achieved in 1981. While they fell short on that Arizona stage on January 11, 2016, Swinney said after the loss it wouldn’t take another 34 years to return to the bright lights, the big moment.
He was right. It took less than one.
With the clock past midnight, taking them towards January 10, 2017, Deshaun Watson and Hunter Renfrow capitalized on years of program and personal development by bringing another championship to Clemson in the final second of their rematch against the Crimson Tide, rolling by 35-31. Click the video above to hear from coach Swinney, Deshaun Watson, and the Tigers on their achievement and this moment from ABC Columbia Sports Director Mike Gillespie.
