State House Crowds Honor MLK

Columbia, S.C (WOLO) — On the 54th year honoring the Father of the civil rights movement, Hundreds converged onto the the South Carolina grounds  to pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This was the 24th year the King Day at the Dome has been held starting at Zion Baptist Church along Washington Street, where dozens march to the North Side steps of the State House.

People from all backgrounds and age groups came out to celebrate the life and legacy of MLK, with spiritual songs, a rally and several speeches to honor the late civil  rights icon.

Te king day at the Dome kicks off a slew of events scheduled to take place Monday evening. Including a celebration by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated taking place at 3:06pm at the intersection of Harden and Greene Streets. Immediately after, a commemoration ceremony will be held at 4PM at the Martin Luther King Jr. Park and Community Center. Clafin University’s President, Dr. Henry Tisdale will be the keynote speaker.

ABC Columbia’s Gabrielle Franklin was at Monday afternoon’s event and will have reaction on the news at 6 and 11.
