Nikki Haley Confirmed by US Senate as Ambassador to the U.N

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) (AP)– Nikki Haley has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the Ambassador to the UN

The vote came down Tuesday afternoon after the Senate Foreign Relations Committee overwhelmingly advanced her nomination.

South Carolina Senate President Pro Tem Hugh Leatherman resigned his leadership post to avoid becoming lieutenant governor.

Leatherman resigned Tuesday minutes before U.S. senators began voting to confirm Gov. Nikki Haley. Leatherman has refused to leave the Senate to take the largely ceremonial position.

Instead, once Haley resigns as governor, Lt. Gov. Henry McMaster will become the 91st governor of South Carolina.
