COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – A bi-partisan group of lawmakers is pushing to legalize medical marijuana in South Carolina.

28 states nationwide have given patients access to marijuana for pain treatment. Even so, the possibility of adding SC to the list spurs passionate debate inside the State House. In 2014 a bill passed allowing for possession of CBD oil for patients with severe forms of epilepsy. Last session’s bill to take it a step further was shot down in committee. In early January, legislators gathered to announce a new bill, the South Carolina Compassionate Care Act.

As the legislature prepares to give this another chance, ABC Columbia News is giving you your own look. Every Thursday evening through the month of February, Grace Joyal will bring you a special report into the issue. From a family who’s daughter is fighting for life, to the state’s top cop who says this will encourage recreational use, to a researcher at the University of South Carolina doing cutting-edge research, we’re diving into all sides of this debate.

Watch for these exclusive reports on ABC Columbia News at 11, with a preview at 6, through the month of February.
