Loaded Gun Found in Sumter Student’s Bookbag

SUMTER, S.C. (WOLO) – An eighth-grade student was arrested in Sumter County Wednesday after police say a loaded handgun was found in the student’s backpack.
While investigating an odor coming from the boys restroom at Bates Middle School, the school’s resource officer questioned the student and found a weapon.
Authorities say this is an isolated incident.
The student was transported to a state Department of Juvenile Justice facility and is awaiting a detention hearing.
