BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA – Protests over an alt-right speaker at University of California’s Berkeley campus, Wednesday night, turned violent. Controversial extreme right conservative Milo Yiannopoulos, an editor for Breitbart, was scheduled to speak. According to the Los Angeles times, Yiannopoulos is a provocateur whose language conforms with the alt-right movement, although Yiannopoulos disputes that classification. At Berkeley, protestors were seen lighting fires, tearing down barriers and throwing fireworks. Campus police say Yiannopoulos left the campus and the event was cancelled. Yiannopoulos has since posted on his verified Facebook: “the left is absolutely terrified of free speech and will do literally anything to shut it down.” Campus police say on Twitter that the campus is on lockdown and a shelter in place has been ordered.
