SCE&G Warns Customers Against Phone Scam
Local Business Owner Contacted Multiple Times by Scammers
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)- South Carolina Electric and Gas is warning customers about phone scams directed at residences and small business.
Restaurant owner George Xanthakos says his restaurant in Cayce has been targeted by scammers acting as SCE&G on multiple occasions.
Xanthakos acted quickly by contacting SCE&G, an action the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (SCDCA) recommends all customers do if they have concerns.
“If you are getting a phone call that you are not comfortable with or a little bit suspicious about, it’s always best to hang up and follow up,” said Juliana Harris of SCDCA.
SCE&G says they see a pattern of these scams and want their customers to stay vigilant.
“These cams happen year-round and they change frequently so we urge our customers, business owners and residential, to just become familiar with our billing practices so they can avoid becoming a victim of these types of scams,” said Katrina Goggins of SCANA Corporation.
If you experience a call from SCE&G you feel may be fraudulent, call 1-800- 251-7234. You can also report the scam to the state Department of Consumer Affairs at 803-734- 4200.
