SC Disaster Recovery Office Hopes to Build More Homes for Flood Victims
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)- During the Governor’s 2017 cabinet meeting, Department of Commerce Secretary Bobby Hitt announced the South Carolina Disaster Recovery Office (SCDRO) is gearing up for a big year, hoping to build over 40 homes per month to assist people recovering from the October 2015 floods.
“We’re excited that we are getting to a point where we can restore 40-50 a month. It’s been a while to get us to this point but we’re excited about it,” said Hitt.
The Department of Commerce manages the federal funds for that assist the state’s recovery efforts. Leaders say the program has completed 11 homes for flood survivors so far but limited resources can slow down the group’s production
“We’re targeting families with incomes of less than 24,00 a year. I hate to tell you there are more of them than we have the money for,” said Hitt.
Both the SCDRO and state department of commerce maintain that homes needed for families will continue to be build despite the narrow funding.
