COLUMBIA SC (WOLO) — “I love aviation,” says author Kaela Harmon when asked about the subject matter of her new book, “Zoey’s First Plane Ride.”  Harmon, who has worked in the airline and aviation industry for many years, including several at Columbia Metropolitan Airport, says that although there are a lot of books about fighter jets, finding one that talks about commercial flying is a bit more difficult.

“Once I was hit with the inspiration for this project, my first step was to research what was already available to kids.  What I found is that most children’s books about aviation feature airplanes and fighter jets.  Just like in real life, airports are largely overlooked or an afterthought.  So, my instinct to tell the airport’s story kicked in and I was compelled to do what I could to fill that gap.”

Harmon points out that although the steps outlined in the book may seem obvious to anyone who has ever flown, there were still a few things learned from her work in airports that came in handy when it came time to sit down and write.

The easy to read book is rich with pictures that follow Zoey’s journey from packing for her trip to going through security, and even baggage claim.
