911 Calls Reveal Panic as Family Terrorized by Group
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. (WSB-TV) – Channel 2 Action News has received 911 tapes detailing a frightening experience that a family had with a group carrying Confederate flags and other weapons.
In July 2015, a group called Respect the Flag pulled up to a birthday party for an 8-year-old black child in Douglas County.
In the 911 call, one of the people at the party said the group was driving around with a Confederate flag and guns and knives.
Another woman at the party, Melissa Alford, said they counted at least 7 trucks in the convoy on Campbellton Street. She said they threatened to “kill y’all [N-words].”
“This is behavior that even supporters of the Confederate battle flag can agree is criminal and shouldn’t be allowed,” Douglas County District Attorney Brian Fortner said in a statement.
Kayla Norton and Jose Torres, who were convicted in the crime, were sentenced in court Monday.
A Douglas County judge sentenced the defendants to a year longer in prison than the state was seeking. He sentenced Torres to 20 years, with 13 to serve in prison. Norton was given 15 years, with six to serve. Upon their release, McClain ordered them to be permanently banished from Douglas County.
