COLUMBIA SC (WOLO)–Running enthusiasts are lacing up their sneakers and preparing for a 3.7 mile and 475 feet Saturday morning. It’s the last 475 where the story lies. For the 6th time, 800 runners will gather at Vulcan Materials, and run into the quarry, the bottom of which is nearly 500 feet below sea level.
Once runners get to the bottom, they will turn and tackle the 10 percent grade trip back out of the quarry.
According to Vulcan’s Darla Oldham, quarry runs, which started in Columbia, have become popular and are found in six cities.
Registration for the race is $40, with proceeds benefiting the Olympia Community Education Foundation.
