COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – The South Carolina Arts Commission is celebrating 50 years of bringing the arts to students.
Wednesday, the agency will kick-off the anniversary with “April Showers Art Part.” More than 100 elementary schools have painted and donated umbrellas, that will be installed on the ceiling of the Grand Hall at 701 Whaley. The event runs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $75.
The umbrellas were created to promote a year-long project. The commission is also celebrating 30 years of the Arts in Basic Curriculum project. The S.C. Arts Commission launched ABC in 1987 to ensure that all S.C. students have access to a quality, comprehensive education in the arts, including dance, drama, music, visual arts and creative writing. ABC sites have made a commitment to implementing the arts in the classroom.
Good Morning Columbia’s Grace Joyal talked to commission board member Elizabeth Sowards about the commission’s mission, and their 50th anniversary celebration.
