COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– Tragic news out of Riverbanks Zoo as workers, and visitors, mourn the loss of the Zoo’s first infant gorilla.
The infant gorilla was born in the breech position Thursday. This was the first pregnancy for 11-year-old Macy, one of the Zoo’s three female western lowland gorillas, according to zoo officials.
Gorilla Base Camp has been closed to give Macy the time she needs with her infant.
ABC Columbia spoke with Zoo President and CEO Satch Krantz about the sad development, he tells ABC Columbia the staff went from elation over news of the birth to grief.
