Wrongful death lawsuit filed after killing of 9-year-old, grandmother

DARLINGTON, S.C. (WPDE) — A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed for the killing of a Darlington 9-year-old and her grandmother, according to court paperwork.

The lawsuit was filed by Tonay Davis, the mother of 9-year-old Deziyah Davis and daughter of 51-year-old Denise Couplin, on June 27.

It asks for actual and punitive damages against Cephas Cowick and his wife, Katherine, as well as Jermika Couplin, who is representing the estate of Denise Couplin.

The suit alleges that Denise Couplin asked for her grandaughter to spend some time with her over the summer, and

It says, as a result of the actions of the defendants, the 9-year-old girl was killed and her family incurred funeral expenses, as well as mental anguish related to her death.

The suit does not list an exact amount but asks for “an award of actual damages, punitive damages, for the costs of this action, and for such other and further relief as this Court may deem just and proper.”
