West Nile Confirmed in Rock Hill, Individual Expected to Recover
ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — Wednesday, officials are spraying a 1-square mile area for mosquitoes after an individual was diagnosed with West Nile.
York County Emergency Management director Chuck Haynes said the Department of Health and Environmental Control confirmed the West Nile case, but the person is expected to fully recover. He said the virus was found in mosquitoes in the area.
Haynes said property around three schools in the area is being sprayed. Rock Hill officials said spraying will end around 1 a.m. Thursday near a fire station in the southern part of the city.
DHEC says most people who are infected do not develop any symptoms. But about 20 percent will develop a fever and other symptoms. In rare cases, meningitis occurs, which can be fatal.
