Speaker of the House Calls for Executive Director of Office of Regulatory Staff to Resign
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)- Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives Jay Lucas is calling for the executive director of the Office of Regulatory Staff (ORS) to step down from his role. The call for resignation comes after executive director Dukes Scott testified before the House Utility Ratepayer Protection Committe (HURPC).
In a statement, Lucas said: ““Although this is ultimately Governor McMaster’s decision, I have asked for ORS Executive Director Dukes Scott’s resignation today. Mr. Scott performed his duties to the best of his ability, but his testimony before the committee raised significant concerns over ORS’ management of the VC Summer nuclear project. New leadership, in my opinion, is necessary to assure South Carolina ratepayers the Office of Regulatory Staff holds their interests in the highest regard. I believe this is the first of many steps that must occur to prevent this type of catastrophe from happening again.”
Earlier, Lucas noted many sides share the blame for the Westinghouse debacle including SCE&G, Santee Cooper, the ORS, the Public Service Commission (PSC, and )lawmakers themselves. The Darlington Republican said despite failures of the past, lawmakers should use the HURPC meetings to make things right.
Lawmakers say protecting ratepayers is their top priority going forward, saying energy consumers do not need to spend money on a project deemed dead.
