South Carolina State drops season opener
BATON ROUGE, La (WOLO) – SC State was unable to end up in the end zone throughout the entirety of their season opener, losing to Southern 14-8 in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge.
Jermaine Baxley was wide open with 1:45 left in the game for what would have been a game-tying 52 yard TD with the point after attempt waiting, but the wideout dropped the pass on the hands delivered by quarterback Dewann Ford.
Buddy Pough’s Bulldogs out-gained the Jaguars 347-297, but only converted that into two Tyler Scandrett field goals and a safety that came off a blocked punt by Chad Gilcrest.
SC State holds their home opener in Orangeburg Saturday, hosting Charleston Southern.
