Supplies Flying Off Shelves as Midlands Residents Prep For Irma

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)- Water, and other essential storm supplies are flying off the shelves as Midlands residents prepare for Hurricane Irma.

The good news is that you still have time to stock up on what you need.

“I’m making sure we are stocked with non-perishables like water and bread,” shopper, Clarke Newton.

Families were loading their cars on Wednesday with supplies to get them through the storm.

“I purchased bread, water, and I also got my canned goods out the way so I’m ready,” Shopper, Michelle Mcdaniel said.

“I just did my regular grocery shopping and I picked up a little extra water just in case the power goes out,” shopper, Todd Bartman said.

While water is at the top of everyone’s shopping list, officials say finding water in stores should be the least of your worries.

“There has been a mad rush on water but you’ve got to remember that there is nothing wrong with your water that’s in your home now so you can fill up your containers at home and not panic if you can’t find case of water at the store,” American Red Cross Executive Director, Rebecca Jordan said.

Jordan said now is the time to trade plastic for paper.

“Fill up your car tank and have some cash on hand because if you lose power for a long period of time you’ll be needing cash to purchase items,” Jordan said.
