Irma Causes Power Outages For Thousands Of South Carolina Households

Columbia, SC (WOLO)– Tropical Storm Irma is causing the number of households without power in South Carolina to climb.  Since noon on Monday, utilities report around 81,000 customers without power. Most of them are customers of the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina and South Carolina Electric and Gas.

The utilities report about 21,000 power outages in Beaufort County and about 18,000 in Charleston County.

Winds from Imra are slowly increasing in the state, causing the rest of the outages are scattered across South Carolina.

If you are experiencing a power outage, there are many ways to report it.

First, SCE&G said to verify and update your contact information with them by first logging into your account or calling them at 1-800-251-7234.

To report an outage by text, register for the text option online at www.sceg.com. Then login and look for “Account Options” feature. Then find “Activate Text Options” and follow the instructions. Once registered, if you experience an outage you can text the word “OUT” to 467234.

 

To report an outage from a mobile device, go to the internet from your internet-ready mobile device or phone and visit  www.sceg.com/mobile and click “Outages & Emergencies.”

Winds and surge have increased along the South Carolina coast.

The National Weather Service says winds gusted to 72 mph at Folly Beach Pier, about 10 miles south of downtown Charleston.

The tidal gauge near downtown Charleston says water levels are running 2 feet above normal. The next high tide is just after noon Monday. Forecasters have warned the water could run up to 6 feet above normal.
