SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WOLO) – The 81st Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas saw North Carolina win for the third year in a row, topping South Carolina’s top high school football players 55-24.
It’s the Tar Heel State’s first three-game winning streak since 1949-1951.
Dutch Fork’s Bryce Thompson, who committed to Carolina Wednesday, won “Moust Outstanding Player” for the Sandlappers in the loss. Despite being recruited by USC to play defensive back, the Silver Fox senior caught seven passes and racked up 165 yards, scoring one touchdown on the afternoon.
Fort Dorchester QB Dakereon Joyner, “Mr. Football” award winner and a fellow USC commit, scored a five yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter, but only completed two of five passes for 69 yards, along with an interception. He did not play in the second half after injuring his shoulder.
A fellow future Gamecock, defensive back RJ Roderick from Cane Bay, also left the game after the first two quarters with a knee injury.
Gatorade player of the year, South Pointe’s Derion Kendrick, played wide receiver in the All-Star game. The Clemson commit had three catches for 60 yards and a touchdown.
