Jadeveon Clowney seeking contract extension

Columbia S.C. – Houston Texans linebacker and former Gamecock Jadeveon Clowney was the number one overall pick in the NFL draft when he entered the league four years ago.

This year he will enter the fifth year option on his rookie deal, and according to his agent Bus Cook, Clowney will be seeking a contract extension.

The 24-year-old has certainly lived up to his draft hype. Clowney is coming off a career high 9.5 sack season, and is widely considered one of the most versatile players at his position.

Under his current deal, Clowney is set to make $13.8 million during the 2018 campaign.

According to NBC Sports, he can expect an extension upwards of $50 million covering three years.

Clowney may try to negotiate for more, however because he is still three years away from hitting the open market, (he still has one year left on his current deal, and the Texans can tag him for two years after that) his leverage is limited.

The matter comes down to whether or not his extension will accurately represent his expected value over the next three years.
