COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ The South Carolina Highway Patrol says a fatal crash involving 10 vehicles has closed the main highway west out of Columbia.

Lance Cpl. David Jones said the crash happened in the westbound lanes of Interstate 20 around 11 a.m. Thursday in Lexington County near the U.S. 378 exit.

Jones says I-20 west will likely be closed until after Thursday afternoon’s rush hour as troopers investigate the wreck and crews work to clean up debris.

Jones says at least one person died and several people were taken to the hospital. He says the wreck involved at least two tractor-trailers.

State Department of Transportation data says nearly 84,000 vehicles use all lanes of I-20 near the crash on an average day.
