WEST COLUMBIA SC (WOLO) – Picture human-powered, handmade sculptures, powered by pedaling, pushing, or pulling, all the way down Meeting Street in West Columbia, in the 2nd Kinetic Derby Day.  According to West Columbia Communication and Technology Director Anna Huffman, Kinetic Derbys are found in The Florida Keys, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and here in the Midlands.

Huffman says that the Derby is planned for April 27, and include a parade of sculptures, soap box derby races, art, music, food, and more.  Anyone can build and participate in the race and the day, but like NASCAR, there are some specific rules for building the cars.  “We recommend creating you care four to six weeks before Kinetic Derby Day,” Huffman says.  She also suggests getting creative with recycled bottles, plates, bike parts, and more.

Proceeds from the day will benefit the West Columbia Beautification Foundation.
