CPD: Police cruiser hit by train after chase on West Beltline Boulevard

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – The Columbia Police Department says a police cruiser was hit by a train following a chase on Sunday.

Authorities say it happened on West Beltline Boulevard around noon.

According to investigators, an officer noticed a suspicious vehicle, which was later confirmed to be stolen and tried to initiate a traffic stop.

Police say the suspect fled, later abandoning the vehicle and ran on foot.

They also said the officer stopped the vehicle on the train tracks, then got out and tried to catch the suspect.

Officials say the train then hit the police cruiser.

Police didn’t report any injuries but the suspect is still at large.
