Cayce Police say loaded gun found in bookbag of Airport HS Student

District: Lexington Two does not tolerate weapons on campus or any potential threat to the safety of our students or employees.

CAYCE, SC (WOLO)– Cayce Police say they have made an arrest, after officers say, they found a gun in a bookbag Monday.

According to Cayce Police, on August 22, 2022, Police arrested 18-year-old Treyvon Hampton on charges of a weapons law violation.

Cayce Police say Hampton had a loaded gun in his bookbag when he got off of the bus Monday morning at Airport High School.

Hampton was taken to the Lexington County Detention Center.

 Cayce Police say over the weekend a shooting occurred near the Town of Gaston in Lexington County.  According to Cayce Police, Lexington County Deputies notified Cayce that some of the students involved in the shooting may be enrolled at Airport High School. According to an incident report, Hampton was identified by Lexington County Deputies as one of the students that may be involved. Based on information received, Cayce Police say officials searched the bookbag.

Police say, as an added precaution, the Cayce Police Department put additional officers at Airport High School.

According to Cayce Chief Chris Cowan, “We do not tolerate weapons in our Cayce schools and I am proud of our officers that worked quickly this morning to keep our students and our teachers safe. This was a collaborative effort with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and Lexington School District Two. The partnership with both of these entities helped stop the potential for any violent acts in our school.”

The school district released the following : The student will face district discipline in accordance with board policy and state law.
