DHEC temporarily allowing schools to accept military children’s federal immunization records

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) is temporarily giving schools permission to accept federal immunization records from military children as proof of immunizations.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)— The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) is temporarily giving schools permission to accept federal immunization records from military children as proof of vaccinations.

Beginning Oct. 17, all South Carolina schools will be authorized  to accept a signed DD-2766C form as law-required proof of immunization for military children. The change will stay in effect until federal software systems can be adjusted.

“This solution, while temporary until a solution can be found that allows the software systems to interact, is a win for all the military families who call South Carolina home and for our dedicated school nursing staff members across the state,” says DHEC Director Dr. Edward Simmer. “We hope to reconcile the software issue by 2024, but until then this removes an unintentional barrier and allows everyone to attend school in a safe and healthy environment.”

Medical providers on SC’s military bases use a different system than DHEC’S Statewide Immunization Online Network (SIMON) system, creating a hurdle for military parents when enrolling their children at school.
