First pediatric flu-related death reported in South Carolina

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has reported this season's first pediatric flu-related death.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)—The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has reported this season’s first pediatric flu-related death.

In a release provided to ABC Columbia News, State Epidemiologist and DHEC’s Director of the Bureau of Communicable Disease Prevention and Control, Dr. Linda Bell says, “It’s sad and unfortunate that we must report the death of a child in the Midlands Region from the complications of the flu. We extend our condolences to this family.”

DHEC officials say they have seen widespread flu activity and it indicates a possible severe flu season. Young children and people with medical conditions are at an increased risk of complications from the flu.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and DHEC recommend vaccinations for everyone 6 months of age and older.

DHEC health department clinics offer low or no cost flu vaccines by appointment.
