CNN— According to a new study, eating more whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and nuts could reduce the risk of an early death by nearly 20%.

The study published in the Journal Jama Internal Medicine followed the eating habits of more than 119,000 men and women over 36 years.

Researchers looked at how closely the participants followed eating styles focused on whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes.

Not only did healthy eating reduce the risk of death, it also reduced the risk of death from certain chronic diseases.
