SC residents buy lottery tickets ahead of drawing for 3rd largest jackpot
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — For the fourth time, the Mega Millions lottery jackpot prize has climbed to more than 1 billion dollars.
Tuesday night’s drawing will have many in South Carolina hoping they can be the second billion dollar lottery winner in the Palmetto State’s history.
“South Carolina has had one Mega Millions jackpot winner. It was a whopper. We sold a 1 point 5 billion dollar Mega Millions jackpot ticket back in October of 2018,” said Holli Armstrong, South Carolina Education Lottery spokesperson.
That winning ticket was sold in Simpsonville in the Upstate. Tuesday, lottery players nationwide will be hoping to win 1 point 1 billion dollars.
“It’s the third largest we’ve ever had in the game,” Armstrong said. “There’s still time to buy a ticket. You have until 10 pm and you can pick up a ticket at about any grocery or convenience store in our state.”
So what are your odds of winning the lottery?
“Your odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 303 million but there are lots of prizes in between,” Armstrong said. “If you buy a ticket tonight and you don’t match all six numbers, you really need to check how many you did match. You might have won 500 dollars or even a million dollars.”
The South Carolina Education Lottery reports that two people in the state were one number off winning the jackpot during Friday’s drawing.
“Mega Millions tickets are two dollars. You only need to buy one ticket to win,” Armstrong said. “We’ve had lots of jackpot winners who just bought one ticket. There’s no need to buy multiple tickets… it only takes one.”
No matter where the winner comes from, South Carolina’s education system ends up with a nice consolation prize.
“Roughly 43 cents of that supports education here in our state. During the jackpot run we’ve had, about 9 million dollars has been raised for education,” Armstrong said. “This supports higher education programs and also K through 12 programs. It’s been used to buy buses and many community education programs also benefit.”
The drawing for the jackpot prize takes place Tuesday night at 10:59 p.m.
