AG Alan Wilson warns consumers of student loan debt scam calls
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)—Attorney General Alan Wilson is teaming up with the FCC to warn of a potential rise in scam calls and texts regarding student loan debt after the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Biden vs. Nebraska.
The scam calls or texts may offer some form of relief from your debt and allege to be from the Student Loan Forgiveness Center.
To spot a scam, officials say beware if you’re pressured to send money or give personal information, the caller requests an up front payment in order to appeal your application, you are requested to contact them through an app, the call is made using a suspicious caller ID, the call or text message claims to be from a “student loan forgiveness center” or a state “forgiveness center,” or if you’re directed to any other website outside of studentaid.gov.
