SC attorney general announces indictments related to inmates with cellphones in South Carolina prisons

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Attorney General Alan Wilson announced new State Grand Jury Indictments in connection with inmates using contraband and other charges.

Wilson announced seven indictments surrounding crimes being directed by state prison inmates including the use of cellphones.

In all the new indictments and charges total 57 counts against nine defendants.

He says some of the inmates are accused of using cellphones to commit crimes.

Also among the acts were allegations involving the victimization of a child.

“Criminal activity should not continue behind bars, especially when it’s facilitated by a contraband cell phone or those who carry a badge,” said Attorney General Alan Wilson.

An investigation known as “Block Party,” led to the indictments of two SCDC officers for offenses relating to illegal contraband in Broad River Correctional Institution, which led to the seizure of over 600 grams of methamphetamine, 200 grams of cocaine, and marijuana, tobacco, cell phones, and other electronics.

“People who wear badges and are sworn to uphold the law should be held to a higher standard,” SCDC Director Bryan Stirling said.

The indictments were the results of partnerships between the state grand jury the attorney general’s office and the federal, state, and local agencies.
