DHEC expert speaks about staying safe from sickness during flu season
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — Flu season typically runs from October to March.
This year, DHEC is reporting that cases are particularly high here in the Palmetto State.
“For the past few weeks, South Carolina has been one or two in the nation for the number of flu cases reported by the CDC,” said Dr. Martha Buchanan, DHEC lead medical consultant.
South Carolina is also seeing other respiratory illnesses such as COVID and RSV going around.
“We see increases in respiratory illnesses after every holiday,” Buchanan said. “What we see right now is a downturn in reporting because offices were closed. We expect the numbers to go back up next week.”
Buchanan says that good sleep, a healthy diet and regular exercise can help your immune system fight off any respiratory illness.
“Don’t go to the gym if you’re sick,” she advises. “Wash your hands regularly. Use wipes to wipe off frequently touched areas.”
She also recommends getting a flu shot if you have yet to do so.
“All flu vaccines are a quadrivalent vaccine,” Buchanan said. “All four strains are included in the vaccine so we believe it’s going to be very effective.”
While the vaccine is effective, Dr. Buchanan says South Carolina typically has a low vaccination rate. And she adds there is a good reason why you need a new shot every flu season.
“We make the vaccine based on those variants that we see circulating,” Buchanan said. “The flu is slightly different every year. That’s why you have to get a vaccine every year.”
Dr. Buchanan also recommends wearing a mask to prevent any respiratory illnesses.
