Coroner identifies infant who died in Rembert mobile home fire

SUMTER COUNTY S.C. (WOLO)– The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office says an infant has died in a Rembert mobile home fire.

According to deputies, in the early morning hours of Friday, January 19, 2024, the residents of the Rembert, South Carolina home discovered the mobile home was on fire.

Four people were able to escape the home and were taken to the Kershaw Medical Center but 7-month-old Oaklenn Wooten died, says the sheriff’s department.

Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker says the child died due to injuries received during the fire.

Sumter County Sheriff’s Office deputies and investigators responded to the scene.

Sheriff Anthony Dennis contacted the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and asked them to begin an investigation.

“I join all of our deputies, officers, and staff of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office in expressing our sympathy to the family who suffered this tragic loss. SLED will be leading the investigation, and we will await their findings to learn the cause of the fire,” said Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis.
