ACLU sues S.C. prison systems challenging new inmate interview policy
Columbia, SC (WOLO) — A lawsuit filed Thursday is challenging a state policy against interviewing inmates in South Carolina prisons.
The lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) claims that the policy is a violation of the inmate’s 1st Amendment Rights.
A spokeswoman for the state’s prisons said the policy protects the rights of the victims of the crimes that sent the inmates to prison in the first place, and helps prison employees maintain strict control over inmate communications which, without limits, can threaten security and safety.
