Piecewise Coffee Co. on Devine Street celebrates official grand opening

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — Most of us can’t get the day going without a fresh cup of coffee. And let’s be honest, sometimes it may take more than one to really get started.

The new Piecewise Coffee Co. on Devine Street is sure to get you percolating.

Co-owners Zach and Jacob Kirby along with City of Columbia officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate their official grand opening, after a soft opening in late January.

For Zach, strong coffee means strong relationships.

“I just love that aspect, it’s ‘hey, this is where we can come and enjoy time together, this is where we can have hard conversations. This is where we can talk and re-engage with old friends and even do work, and I just love that aspect of everybody has a purpose of we can meet centrally here and gather together,” he says.

Carole Mouton and her daughter Stephanie Vaught agree that good conversation and coffee go hand-in-hand.

“Anytime we can get together over coffee is even better,” they say. “It’s a good day,” Carole reiterates.

Fresh pastries are also on the menu. Stephanie and Carole say they love the coffee and cinnamon biscuits — Stephanie says her mom is also a regular at the first Piecewise location on State Street in Cayce.

“And she comes everyday to one of the locations, so they know her by name, and they let her fix her coffee the way she likes it,” says Stephanie.

“I get the coffee the way that I like it!” jokes Carole.

Zach says Piecewise offers specialty seasonal drinks (floral spring inspired ones at the moment), as well as a robust menu of hot and cold coffees with fresh ingredients and syrups that are mostly made in house.

But for him everything they offer circles back to relationships.

“For us, small business is the key to a thriving community. You know? We do appreciate the other businesses in town who aren’t necessarily local because they give good jobs to good people. But in terms of who’s gonna invest back in your community, it’s gonna be a small business every time. You know those national chains aren’t sponsoring your soccer team, they not attending your church, they’re not giving to local charities, so we want to be the place where you can come knowing the barista is in that community, they’re serving that community, and they’re remembering who you are as a part of that community,” he says.

The new Piecewise location on Devine Street is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.
