Lexington Medical Center celebrates 30 years of their Doula program

LEXINGTON CO., SC (WOLO)- May is International Doula month and Lexington Medical Center is celebrating a big milestone- 30 years offering their Doula program to patients! This month, officials want to spread awareness of this free resource!

A doula is a birth coach who provides physical, emotional and educational help for women during and after labor. Doulas are experienced health care professionals who undergo specific training for assisting pregnant women and newborns.

In 1994, Lexington Medical Center began an innovative doula program that was the first-of-its-kind in the Southeast. The program has received national recognition and serves as a benchmark for programs around the country. Officials say Lexington Medical Center is the only hospital in the Midlands who offers doulas to patients for free on a first come, first serve basis.

This month, if you travel down I-26 east, the hospital is lighted pink and blue to celebrate, and are asking the community to share their doula photos on the Lexington Medical Center Facebook page! Click here to learn more information on the doula program or call (803) 791-2631.
